An iconic swim!

As a local guide, I’ve spent a while getting to know this legendary 1.2km strait between the inner Hebridean islands of Jura and Scarba.

With an appreciation for what this iconic swim takes and an authentic cultural understanding, I feel ready to help others to experience and complete such an iconic swim. In partnership with fellow local operators Farsain Cruises & Charters, departures will be from Craobh Haven just south of Oban.

A fair amount of preparation goes into the organisation of this and flexibility is required. We have a few attempts booked in already for this season but there are some limited tide windows available (between June and September).

Alternatively, attempting the swim next year might be more realistic. Either way, email me at swimdanthemerman@gmail.com to get the ball rolling.

Steeped in Gaelic folklore

Here’s what is included and a few considerations:

  • This can only be private chartered as an individual or small group for up to a max of 4.

  • If booking as a small group of up to 4, all swimmers should know each other, be roughly a similar pace and/or prepared to swim together.

  • You need to be able to swim 1km in 35-40 mins, as a minimum requirement in advance.

  • The 4 hour chartered experience also includes a short acclimatisation swim just off the Sound of Jura in a beautiful and remote location (approx 1 hour before the Corryvreckan attempt).

  • Full safety cover, cultural guidance and

  • coaching (if required) from an experienced local swim guide and open water coach.

  • Fully coded and comfortable support vessel, designed with swimming in mind and a knowledgeable skipper.

  • We have two tide windows a month (usually lasting 3 days) to facilitate swims across the Corryvreckan. In order to maximise the experience and safety we will aim for neap tides and at slack water, turning towards the ebb.

  • Ultimately the Cailleach bheur is the boss She decides whether you will be permitted across!
